Hashcat

Hashcat is the world's fastest and most advanced password recovery utility, supporting five unique modes of attack for over 300 highly-optimized hashing algorithms.

Installation

MacOS

brew install hashcat

Debian

apt install hashcat

Examples

Show an example hash for each hash-mode

Use this to find the mode of the hashed string:

hashcat --example-hashes | grep "some part of hash"

Wordlist attack (Straight)

hashcat -a 0 -m 0 example.hash /usr/share/wordlists/rockyou.txt

Brute-force attack (Mask)

hashcat -a 3 -m 0 example.hash ?a?a?a?a?a?a

Wordlist + Rules

hashcat -a 0 -m 0 example.hash /usr/share/wordlists/rockyou.txt -r rules/best64.rule

Help output
